Don’t let half-term break the bank with these budget tips for treating your kids — plus how to claim your free fiver

MUMS and dads – you are past the midway point of the half-term break.

But if the kids are still driving you crazy, it might be time to escape from the house and enjoy a day out.

Here, Natasha Rachel Smith, consumer affairs editor at TopCashBack, has put together tips on how to treat the little rascals without pulling too hard on the purse strings.

Sign up for a Family & Friends Railcard as you could save a third on train journeys.

It is worth keeping tickets from previous events because some days out and attractions offer free returning policies within 12 months of a valid ticket being issued and used.

If you are thinking of going to the cinema, don’t just turn up at your nearest big screen. Doing research and looking for deals can often pay off, from promotions at other cinemas to 2-for-1 deals on certain days.

Stay local. When was the last time you checked out your community website or notice board? You will be surprised at the number of free events at your town or church hall – from arts and crafts to dancing and martial arts taster sessions, have a look round to see what’s on.

Be prepared. Paying to eat out on top of entry to events and activities can really increase costs, especially if you have a big family. Make a packed lunch. Ingredients for four to five sandwiches and a multipack of crisps can cost as little as £5 altogether. You would end up spending more than that per person at a cafe or restaurant.

Reap what you sow. If you live in a suburban environment, city farms can be a great option. They are often free and the only cost you might have is for a bag of feed.
