Are you in the market for a smart doorbell that will let you see and talk to visitors from your smartphone, wherever you are? One popular option just got a little more affordable.
Amazon today announced it has completed its $1 billion acquisition of smart home device maker Ring, and is celebrating the occasion by dropping the price of the company’s Video Doorbell. Previously priced at $132.99, the original Ring Video Doorbell can now be yours for just $99.99.
The device earned a “good” rating in PCMag’s 2015 review, nabbing props for its easy installation, HD video, cloud recording, and motion-detection notifications. On the down side, we noted that “audio could be better” and that it has a “short battery life.”
The Ring Video Doorbell “uses an HD (720p) camera and your home’s Wi-Fi network to sound a chime and send real-time video to your smartphone when someone presses the Ring button,” we wrote. “It installs in minutes and delivers high-quality video, though audio quality could be better and the internal battery doesn’t last very long between charges.”
Meanwhile, the newer Ring Video Doorbell 2$169.00 at Amazon and the Pro model$237.99 at Amazon are not receiving price cuts. Both received “excellent” marks in PCMag’s reviews, and the Pro earned our coveted Editors’ Choice award.
In a news release today, Amazon said Ring will continue operating under its existing brand. “Customers will not experience any interruption in service and can contact the appropriate company’s customer service team with any questions or issues,” the company wrote.
