Stocks close higher, capping a banner year

U.S. stocks reversed an early downturn to close Tuesday’s trading session and 2019 on a high note.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.27% closed about 73 points, 0.3%, higher, around 28,535. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.29% was 9 points, 0.3%, higher at the close. 

The Nasdaq COMP, +0.30% closed about 27 points, 0.3%, higher. All 11 S&P 500 sectors closed the year higher for the first time since 2010, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

The three indexes gained 22.3%, 28.9%, and 35.2%, during the year, respectively. Shares of Nvidia Corp. NVDA, +1.28% rose more than 1% during the day after an analyst upgrade, and Canopy Growth Corp. WEED, +11.42% was one of many cannabis companies enjoying a stock surge during the trading day.
