Initial gaming benchmarks offer insights into the performance of one of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPUs

NVIDIA may have already unveiled its GeForce RTX 30 series product stack for laptops, of which there are at least 28 SKUs, although only RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 laptops are orderable currently. RTX 3060 laptops will join the fray on February 2, but Benchmark Lab has already published benchmarks for the new MSI GF65 Thin.

Benchmark Lab refers to the GF65 Thin as having an 80 W TGP version of the RTX 3060. However, MSI claims otherwise. On the contrary, MSI reported that the GF65 Thin has the 60 W version of the RTX 3060, as we reported yesterday. Nonetheless, Benchmark Lab is correct because the 60 W model can utilise Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology to reach a TGP of 80 W. The GF65 Thin does not have an 80 W edition of the RTX 3060 by default, though.

The RTX 3060 can scale to 115 W, for reference. By contrast, the 60 W edition is the weakest SKU that NVIDIA sells to OEMs.

Even so, the GF65 Thin achieved good results in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn and Red Dead Redemption 2, among the nine games that Benchmark Lab tested at 1080p. In short, the performance gap between the RTX 3060 and the RTX 2060 generally translates to at least 20% higher framerates in the RTX 3060’s favour.
