Amazon’s newest Kindle e-readers come with USB-C charging and optional Qi wireless

Amazon is the undisputed leader when it comes to e-readers, thanks to its iconic Kindle. The latter is now so popular that it’s declined in a variety of models, including the Kindle Oasis and Paperwhite. The latter was last renewed in 2018 and is starting to age, especially given it still has a microUSB port. Thankfully, Amazon just announced three new Kind Paperwhite models, including a Signature edition, as well as a kid-friendly model.

Kindle Paperwhite

The new 2021 Kindle Paperwhite comes with a 300ppi 6.8″ screen, which is 0.8″ larger than the previous generation. Battery life and performance have also been improved, as the device can last up to ten weeks on a single charge and turn pages 20% faster than the 2018 model. More importantly, the new Kindle Paperwhite now charges using a USB-C connector, allowing you to use your phone or laptop charger to fill it up. The bezels have also been slimmed down to just 10.2mm for a sleeker look.

The rest of the specs are virtually the same as the former model, including 8GB of storage, IPX8 water resistance, and a backlight, which has been updated to an “adjustable warm light.” The all-new Kindle Paperwhite should be available soon for $140.

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition

Amazon is also launching a sister model called the Signature Edition. It shares most of its specs with the all-new Paperwhite but adds wireless charging and an ambient light sensor, allowing it to adjust the backlight adjustable warm light level automatically. The Signature Edition will also feature a bigger, 32GB internal storage capacity. It will cost a whopping $190 and will be available exclusively in black.

Kindle Paperwhite for Kids

A third model, designed with kids in mind, is also hitting the market. Similar to the Fire tablets, it will come with a kid-friendly cover, a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, and a 2-year worry-free guarantee and cost $160.

New interface

The three devices will ship with a redesigned, more intuitive interface, making it easier to navigate and sort and filter your content. Additional software updates will also roll out through the end of the year, offering a simpler setup through the Kindle app on iOS and Android, as well as more accessible settings. It’s also unclear whether this new experience will be rolled out to older models or if it will be exclusive to the new generation.
